We've all seen the prominent Shell logo on the Ferrari F1 cars, and many would assume that this is just a typical cash sponsorship deal. But in the case of Shell and Ferrari, it's much more than that. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! has an interesting write up about the technical sponsorships in F1.

As far as the Ferrari-Shell relationship goes, there is more than just a long and successful partnership to take into account. This year, teams who have been able to develop their oils and lubricants in concert with the development of their engine will have an advantage over customer teams, both when it comes to component longevity and maximising fuel efficiency.

Casual watchers of F1 (and other top tier motorsports) look at the stickers on the cars and assume it's just a representation of cash payments. However, there is so much killer tech going on behind the scenes in terms of fuels and fluids that we don't ever see. And the payoff for Shell is that they get an opportunity to develop and test products in the hyper-stressful world of F1 performance demands, products that will have a real-world impact.

For companies like Shell (and Mobil, Petronas, Total, etc.), Formula One is the ideal laboratory for consumer products, a testing ground in which peak performance is the most basic requirement, and where conditions are more extreme than those faced by any road car.

This is how I feel Formula 1 sponsorship should work.

I believe it's some sort of antenna for telemetry during testing.

Looks like it's got a pitot tube on it, too. So that might be what it is.

I've been using shell premium for awhile now. My Tacoma with 150k threw a CEL once. I put a bottle of fuel system cleaner in and that took care of it. A couple full tanks later it would come back. Rinse, repeat.

I started putting Shell V-Power in and never saw a CEL again. That experience as well as my Mustang making 8 extra ponies with the good stuff will keep me a Shell V-Power loyalist.

It also helps that Fifth Gear validated my opinion of Shell.

This is one place where stuff developed for motorsport does trickle down to the consumer.
